MBAM Centre - Competition Scheme

MBAM (Master Builder Association Malaysia) Centre is a manifestation of the Master Builder's identity and demonstration of possibility translating imagination into reality.

The design vision empowered through the proposal aims to provide resources of info, public acknowledgement, interaction with other building consultants, and education trainings for new builders. Building programs has been designed to encourage trainings and involvement between different stakeholders in order to improve learning and working experience.

Proposed MBAM Centre is energized by multiple semi outdoor or in-between spaces, to be the core of the interaction spaces. The strategy of overlapping spaces and programme allow interaction and connection between different users. Besides, the massing is a clear representation of the programmatic configuration of the centre; expressing clear and distinct architectural language of timelessness as a new typology for utilitarian building.

Grand plaza at ground level is designated for multipurpose function, public events and gantry workshop for the heavy machinery, also function as workshop which eventually function as exhibition equipment for event usage.

 

With the proposed IBS steel post and beams framing system with truss system, the structure intended to express the effective cantilevered spaces, with central life core and services stacks function as the primary structure support for the building.

We believe being sustainable is an attitude that can turn into a habit and that leas to a norm and becomes a cultural practice. Thus our principle of sustainable design has clearly applied in this building.

Translucent concrete has been chosen as the main façade of the cantilevered spaces. Translucent concrete allow light transmissive properties due to embedded light optical elements. Light is conducted through the stone from one end to the other. This result in light pattern on the other surface casting unique shadow on one side which appear as silhouettes through the material. At night, the entire cantilevered box would appear as lantern.

Research Campus & Retirement Home Village

Located within the lush tropical landscape at Malaysia, the site is characterized by lakes and water channels. The design of this research based campus is responds to the physical landscape of the site and to the weather patterns particular to this tropical environment.

To allow students to move around the campus freely, while shaded from the sun or protected from downpours, spaceship-shaped canopies shelter the pedestrian paths that wind around the eastern of the site. These canopies intersect to encircle a landscaped park. Arranged around the edge of the canopies are buildings of teaching and research, contained in institution blocks that tuck beneath the edges of the canopies.

Besides, retirement home village has been designated at the western side of the development. Community and the existing landscape natural world became the inspiration for this elderly village, which provides residents with easy access to the outdoors and plenty of the space to gather. The aims of the design is to provide "a sense of belonging in an era of uncertainty" for this group of residents.

Learning Spaces

As stated by Malcolm Brow: "Learning spaces encompass the full range of places in which learning occurs, from real to virtual, from classroom to char room". Spaces of learning can be more defined under parameters though lecture hall and laboratories come first to mind, auditorium, performance rooms, and studios are main campus spaces.

Task has been assigned to give a quick sketch to conceptualize a new Vocational University. The proposal is designed with inside-out approach - with focus on the creation of optimal learning process and exploration environments - as well as outside-in, in relation to the surrounding context where welcoming urban spaces provide robustness for outdoor work and teaching.

The learning spaces that are the building's backbone are organized around a unifying common space that also serves as a flexible learning environment. Existing river has been diverted into centrepiece of the campus. Chancellery Hall and Knowledge Resource building embraced the varsity plaza, which became the core, floating as a centre island within the campus.

Urban Arcade has been designated leading to Student Terrace Street, inject a new character to the campus, encourage interaction between students and public through laboratories and show room exhibition spaces arrangement.

Designing a vibrant learning space can be a daunting proposition. However, institutions architecture can create learning spaces that will transform student talent and ability to determine a methodology for assessing success.
